BATU MENANGIS
Once upon a time,
there lived a mother and her daughter in a small village, in Borneo island. The
daughter was so beautiful, but she had a very bad behavior. She never helped
her mother to work. She just spent her time in front of the mirror to beautify
herself and to admire her beauty. While her mother had to work to fulfill their
daily needs. She was also a spoiled girl. She always asked everything to her
mother. if her mother didn’t fulfill her want, she would cry. This made her
mother so sad, but somehow she still loved her daughter. So she always tried to
fulfill what her daughter wanted.
One day, the girl
forced her mother to buy a new gown for her. At first, her mother refused her
request. She told her daughter that she didn’t have enough money. But her
daughter threatened her mother, then she fulfilled to but a new gown. Before
going to the market together, her daughter reminded her mom,”Let’s go shopping,
but I don’t want to walk beside you. You had to walk behind me, I felt embarrassed
if people see me”. Even though her mother felt really sad, she obeyed her
daughter request, she did not want her daughter feel embarrassed.
The daughter
dressed beautifully while her mother wore very simple dress. Even though they
were a mother and a daughter, they looked so different. Her mother looked like
her servant. In the middle of their way to market, a man greeted them,”Hi cute
girl, is she your mother?”. he asked. “How could you think that? Of course she
is not my mother, she is my servant”, the daughter replied. Her mother was so
sad to hear that. She kept silent though her heart was crying aloud. Along the
street everyone passing kept asking the girl about her mother. And the girl
always told them that the old woman behind her was her servant.
The mother had
stayed patiently along the street. And finally she could not bear it to hear
her daughter’s answer. she prayed to the God,”O Lord, punish my ungrateful
daughter, please!”, she prayed. Suddenly the girl’s legs turned to be a stone
immediately after the mother stopped praying. The change came slowly. Knowing
her legs turned to be a stone, the daughter screamed.”What’s happen to my
legs?”. Then she realized that she had hurt her mother’s feeling. She cried and
begged for absolution to her mother.”Mommy, Forgive me please, mom”. She
begged. The daughter kept crying. But it was too late. The whole body
eventually became a stone. The mother actually felt so sad to see her daughter.
But she could not do anything to the God’s destiny. Even though she had become
a stone completely, people can still see her tears. That is the reason why it
was called Batu Menangis.
BATU MENANGIS
Pada
zaman dahulu, hiduplah seorang ibu dan putrinya di sebuah desa kecil, di pulau
Kalimantan. Putrinya sangat cantik, namun ia memiliki sifat yang sangat buruk.
Dia tidak pernah membantu ibunya bekerja. Dia hanya menghabiskan waktunya di
depan cermin untuk mempercantik dirinya dan mengagumi kecantikannya. Sementara
ibunya harus bekerja untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari. Dia juga seorang
gadis yang manja. Dia selalu meminta segala sesuatu kepada ibunya. Jika ibunya
tidak memenuhi keinginannya, dia akan menangis. Tentu ini membuat sang ibu
sangat sedih, tapi biar bagaimana ibunya masih mencintai putrinya. Jadi sang
ibu selalu mencoba untuk memenuhi apa yang inginkan putrinya.
Suatu hari, gadis
memaksa ibunya untuk membelikan gaun baru untuknya. Pada awalnya, sang ibu
menolak permintaannya. sang ibu mengatakan kepada anaknya bahwa ia tidak
mempunyai cukup uang. Tapi putrinya mengancam, maka Ibunya memenuhi untuk
membeli gaun baru. Sebelum pergi ke pasar bersama-sama, putrinya mengingatkan
pada ibunya, “Ayo kita pergi berbelanja bersama. Tetapi aku tidak ingin
berjalan di sampingmu. Ibu harus berjalan di belakangku, aku merasa malu jika
orang melihatku”. Meskipun ibunya merasa benar-benar sedih, sang ibu tetap
memenuhi permintaannya putri, ia tidak menginginkan putri merasa malu.
Putrinya berpakaian sangat cantik sementara ibunya mengenakan gaun yang sangat
sederhana. Meskipun mereka adalah ibu dan anak, mereka tampak begitu berbeda.
Ibunya lebih tampak seperti pembantunya. Di tengah jalan ke pasar, seorang pria
menyapamereka, “gadis cantik, apakah dia ibumu?”. ia bertanya. “Bagaimana bisa
Anda berpikir seperti itu? Tentu saja dia bukanlah ibuku, dia adalah

seketika setelah ibu berhenti berdoa. Perubahan terjadi secara perlahan-lahan.
Mengetahui kakinya berubah menjadi batu, putrinya pun berteriak.”Apa yang
terjadi pada kakiku? “. Kemudian dia menyadari bahwa dia telah menyakiti
perasaan ibunya. Dia menangis dan memohon untuk pengampunan kepada ibunya.”Ibu,
ampuni saya, ibu “. Dia memohon. Putrinya terus menangis. Tapi semua itu sudah
terlambat. Seluruh tubuh akhirnya menjadi batu. Ibu benar-benar merasa sangat
sedih menyaksikan putrinya berubah menjadi batu. Tapi sang ibu tidak bisa
melakukan apa-apa lagi atas kehendak Tuhan. Meskipun sang putri telah menjadi
batu, orang masih bisa melihat mata airnya mengalir. Itulah alasan mengapa ia
disebut Batu Menangis.
The Golden Slug (Keong Mas)
In the ancient time, lived a young
man named Galoran. He was respected because of his wealth and honor. His
parents were nobleman so he could live with luxury. However, he was very
wasteful and every day just squandered the wealth of his parents.
One day, his parents died, but he did
not care and continued to spend money as well as before. Because his life was
so extravagant, all the treasure that he had was running out and he became an
unemployed person. Many people sympathized with him and offered a job. But
every time he got the job, he just dallied and it made him always be fired.
Several months later, there was a wealthy widow who interested him. He married
the widow and of course, he was very happy to be living in luxury again.
The widow had a daughter who was very
diligent and clever to weave. Her name is Jambean, a beautiful girl and had
been famous because of her weaving. However, Galoran did not like the girl,
because the girl often scolded him because of his laziness. Finally, he
threatened to torture and kill Jambean. He revealed the plan to his wife and
the wife was very sad to hear of the threat.
Hearing the news, Jambean was very
sad but she volunteered herself to be killed by her father. She told that she
wanted to be dumped into a dam and did not burry under the ground after the
death. The mother agreed and did all of her wants. In the dam, her body and
head suddenly turned into the golden slugs.
Several years later, there are two
widows who were looking for firewood. They were kindred, the first widow named
Mbok Sambega Rondo and the second called Mbok Rondo Sembagil. When looking for
the firewood in the jungle, they were very surprised because of finding the
beautiful golden slugs. They brought it and maintained at home.
Once they brought the snails, there
was always a miracle every day. Their kitchen was always filled with the
delicious food when they came home from work. They were very surprised, and
wanted to know the person who made those foods. They pretended to go to work
and hid in the back of the house. A few moments later, there was a beautiful
girl came from the inside of the conch and she began to cook the delicious
meals.
Both widows then secretly held and
did not let the girl to get into the snail anymore. The girl apparently was
Jambean who had been killed by her father. Both widows then allowed her to stay
with them. Because of their versatility in weaving, she got her famous back and
made a handsome prince attracted. In the end, she married the prince and lived
happily.
Keong Mas
Pada zaman dahulu, hiduplah seorang
pemuda yang bernama Galoran. Ia merupakan salah satu orang yang disegani karena
mempunyai kekayaan dan kehormatan. Orang tuanya merupakan bangsawan sehingga ia
dapat hidup dengan mewah. Namun, ia merupakan seseorang yang sangat boros dan
setiap hari hanya menghambur-hamburkan harta orang tuanya.
Suatu hari, orang tuanya meninggal
dunia namun ia tidak peduli dan terus menghabiskan uang seperti sebelumnya.
Karena hidupnya begitu boros, maka harta yang ia miliki habis dan ia menjadi
seorang pengangguran. Banyak warga yang iba terhadapnya, namun setiap kali ia
mendapatkan pekerjaan, ia hanya bermalas-malasan dan membuat ia sering dipecat.
Beberapa bulan kemudian, terdapat seorang janda kaya raya yang tertarik
dengannya. Ia kemudian menikah dengan janda tersebut. Tentu saja, ia sangat
senang karena bisa hidup mewah seperti sebelumnya.
Janda tersebut mempunyai seorang
anak perempuan yang sangat rajin dan pandai menenun. Namanya Jambean,
seorang gadis yang tenunannya sangat indah dan terkenal di desa tersebut.
Namun, Galoran tidak menyukai gadis tersebut, karena sang gadis selalu
menegurnya karena selalu bermalas-malasan. Karena begitu benci dengan Jambean,
ia mengancam akan menyiksa dan membunuhnya. Ia mengungkapkan rencana tersebut
kepada istrinya dan sang istri sangatlah sedih mendengar ancaman tersebut.
Mendengar berita tersebut, Jambean
sangat sedih namun ia merelakan dirinya dibunuh oleh sang ayah. Ia berpesan
ketika ia telah meninggal, ia ingin agar mayatnya dibuang ke sebuah bendungan
dan jangan dikubur di dalam tanah. Setelah meninggal, sang ibu memenuhi
permintaan tersebut dengan membawa mayatnya ke bendungan dan menceburkannya. Di
dalam bendungan, tubuh dan kepalanya berubah menjadi udang dan siput atau
disebut sebagai keong dalam bahasa jawa.
Beberapa tahun kemudian, dua orang
janda sedang mencari kayu bakar. Mereka adalah kakak beradik dengan nama Mbok
Rondo Sambega dan Mbok Rondo Sembagil. Ketika sedang mencari kayu di hutan,
mereka sangat terkejut karena menemukan keong dan siput yang berwarna emas
serta sangat indah. Keduanya kemudian membawa keong dan
siput tersebut untuk dipelihara di rumah.
Setelah mereka membawa siput tersebut
dan menjadikannya sebagai hewan peliharaan, selalu ada keajaiban setiap hari.
Dapur mereka selalu dipenuhi makanan lezat ketika mereka pulang dari bekerja.
Mereka sangat heran, dan mereka ingin mengetahui siapa orang yang selalu
membuat makanan lezat tersebut. Mereka
berpura-pura pergi bekerja dan bersembunyi di belakang rumah. Beberapa saat
kemudian, muncullah seorang gadis cantik dari dalam keong tersebut dan ia mulai
memasak makanan-makanan lezat.
Kedua janda tersebut kemudian
secara diam-diam memegang gadis tersebut dan tidak membiarkannya lagi untuk
masuk ke dalam keong. Gadis itu ternyata adalah Jambean yang telah dibunuh oleh
ayahnya. Kedua janda tersebut kemudian mengizinkan Jambean untuk tinggal
bersama mereka. Karena kepandaiannya dalam menenun, ia sangat terkenal dan
seorang pangeran tampan tertarik kepadanya. Pada akhirnya, ia menikah dengan pangeran dan hidup bahagia.
The Legend of Malin Kundang
A long time ago, in a small village
near the beach in West Sumatra, a woman and her son lived. They were Malin
Kundang and her mother. Her mother was a single parent because Malin Kundang's
father had passed away when he was a baby. Malin Kundang had to live hard with
his mother
.
Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent,
and strong boy. He usually went to sea to catch fish. After getting fish he
would bring it to his mother, or sold the caught fish in the town. One day,
when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant's ship which was being raided
by a small band of pirates. He helped the merchant. With his brave and power,
Malin Kundang defeated the pirates.
The merchant was so happy and thanked
to him. In return the merchant asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. To get a
better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother alone. Many years later,
Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship and was helped by many ship
crews loading trading goods. Perfectly he had a beautiful wife too. When he was
sailing his trading journey, his ship landed on a beach near a small village.
The villagers recognized him. The news ran fast in the town; “Malin Kundang has
become rich and now he is here”. An old woman ran to the beach to meet the new
rich merchant. She was Malin Kundang’s mother.
She wanted to hug him, released her
sadness of being lonely after so long time. Unfortunately, when the mother
came, Malin Kundang who was in front of his well dressed wife and his ship
crews denied meeting that old lonely woman. For three times her mother begged
Malin Kundang and for three times he yelled at her. At last Malin Kundang said
to her "Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and
ugly woman!" After that he ordered his crews to set sail. He would leave
the old mother again but in that time she was full of both sadness and
angriness. Finally, enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a
stone if he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and really set sail
.
In the quiet sea, suddenly a
thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin
Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship. He fell on a
small island. It was really too late for him to avoid his curse. Suddenly,
he turned into a stone.
Dahulu kala, di sebuah desa kecil dekat pantai di Sumatera Barat, seorang
wanita dan anaknya tinggal. Mereka adalah Malin Kundang dan ibunya. Ibunya
adalah seorang single parent karena ayah Malin Kundang telah meninggal ketika

kepadanya. Sebagai imbalannya pedagang meminta Malin Kundang untuk berlayar
bersamanya. Untuk mendapatkan kehidupan yang lebih baik, Malin Kundang setuju.
Dia meninggalkan ibunya sendirian. Bertahun-tahun kemudian, Malin Kundang
menjadi kaya. Dia memiliki kapal besar dan dibantu oleh banyak awak kapal
memuat barang dagangan. Sempurna dia punya istri yang cantik juga.
Ketika ia sedang berlayar perjalanan
trading, kapal mendarat di pantai dekat sebuah desa kecil. Penduduk desa mengenalinya. Berita itu berlari cepat di kota,
"Malin Kundang telah menjadi kaya dan sekarang dia ada di sini".
Seorang wanita tua berlari ke pantai untuk memenuhi saudagar kaya baru. Dia
adalah ibu Malin Kundang ini. Dia ingin memeluknya, dirilis kesedihannya
menjadi kesepian setelah sekian lama. Sayangnya, ketika ibu datang, Malin
Kundang yang berada di depan berpakaian istri dan awak kapalnya membantah
pertemuan yang tua wanita kesepian. Selama tiga kali ibunya meminta Malin
Kundang dan tiga kali ia berteriak padanya.
Akhirnya Malin Kundang berkata
kepadanya "Cukup, wanita tua! Saya tidak pernah memiliki ibu seperti Anda,
wanita kotor dan jelek!" Setelah itu ia memerintahkan kru untuk berlayar.
Dia akan meninggalkan ibu tua lagi tapi pada saat itu dia penuh baik kesedihan

time ago in the island of Java, Indonesia, lived a couple of farmer. They
had married for some years but they had no children. So they prayed to a
monster called Buta Ijo to give them children. Buta Ijo was a ferocious
and powerful monster. He granted their wish on one condition. When
their children had grown up, they had to sacrifice them to Buta Ijo. He
liked eating fresh meat of human being. The farmers agreed to his
condition. Several months later the wife was pregnant.
She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They
named her Timun Emas. The farmers were happy. Timun Emas was very
healthy and a very smart girl. She was also very diligent. When she was a
teenager Buta Ijo came to their house. Timun Emas was frightened so she
ran away to hide. The farmers then told Buta Ijo that Timun Emas was
still a child. They asked him to postpone. Buta Ijo agreed.
He promised to come again. The following year Buta Ijo came again.
But again and again their parents said that Timun Emas was still a child.
When the third time Buta Ijo came their parents had
prepared something for him. They gave Timun Emas several bamboo needles,
seeds of cucumber, dressing and salt.
‘Timun, take these things’
‘What are these things?’
‘These are your weapons. Buta Ijo will chase
you. He will eat you alive. So run as fast as you can. And if
he will catch you spread this to the ground. Now go!’
Timun Emas was scared so she ran as quickly as she
could. When Buta Ijo arrived she was far from home. He was very
angry when he realized that his prey had left. So he ran to chase
her. He had a sharp nose so he knew what direction his prey ran.
Timun Emas was just a girl while Buta Ijo was a monster
so he could easily catch her up. When he was just several steps behind
Timun Emas quickly spread the seeds of cucumber. In seconds they turned
into many vines of cucumber. The exhausted Buta Ijo was very thirsty so
he grabbed and ate them. When Buta Ijo was busy eating cucumber Timun
Emas could run away.
But soon Buta Ijo realized and started running
again. When he was just several steps behind Timun Emas threw her bamboo
needles. Soon they turned into dense bamboo trees. Buta Ijo found
it hard to pass. It took him some time to break the dense bamboo
forest. Meanwhile Timun Emas could run farther.
Buta Ijo chased her again. When he almost catch
her again and again Timun Emas threw her dressing. This time it turned
into a lake. Buta Ijo was busy to save himself so Timun Emas ran
way. But Buta Ijo could overcome it and continued chasing her.
Finally when Timun Emas was almost caught she threw
her salt. Soon the land where Buta Ijo stood turned into ocean.
Buta Ijo was drowned and died instantly.
Timun Emas was thankful to god and came back to her
home.
Timun Mas

Mereka telah menikah selama beberapa tahun , tetapi mereka tidak punya anak .
Jadi mereka berdoa kepada rakasa yang disebut Buta Ijo untuk memberi mereka

mentimun , saus dan garam .

hidup . Jadi berlari secepat Anda bisa. Dan jika ia akan menangkap Anda

Timun Emas takut sehingga ia berlari secepat yang dia bisa . Ketika Buta Ijo
tiba ia jauh dari rumah . Dia sangat marah ketika ia menyadari bahwa mangsanya
telah meninggalkan . Jadi dia berlari mengejarnya . Dia memiliki hidung yang
tajam sehingga ia tahu apa arah berlari mangsanya .
Timun Emas hanya seorang gadis sementara Buta Ijo adalah rakasa sehingga ia

kemudian mereka berubah menjadi pohon bambu lebat . Buta Ijo merasa sulit untuk
lulus . Ini membawanya beberapa waktu untuk memecahkan hutan bambu lebat .
Sementara itu Timun Emas bisa berlari lebih jauh .
Buta Ijo mengejarnya lagi . Ketika ia hampir menangkapnya lagi dan lagi Timun

tanah tempat Buta Ijo berdiri berubah menjadi laut . Buta Ijo itu tenggelam dan
tewas seketika .
Timun Emas bersyukur kepada Tuhan dan kembali ke rumahnya .

Long
time ago, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. All the people of Prambanan
lived peacefully. But then, Prambanan kingdom was attacked and occupied by the
Pengging kingdom. Prambanan then was ruled by Bandung Bondowoso of Pengging
kingdom. He was a mean king. He also had great supernatural power. His soldiers
were not only humans, but also genies.
The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter named
Loro Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry
her. “You’re very beautiful. Would you be my queen?” asked Bandung Bondowoso.
Loro Jonggrang was shocked. She didn’t like Bandung Bondowoso because he was a
mean person. She wanted to refuse, but she afraid that Bandung Bondowoso would
be angry and endangered the people of Prambanan. Then, she came up with a plan.
“If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand temples for me in just
one night,” said Loro Jonggrang. “What? That’s impossible!” said Bandung
Bondowoso. But he did not give up. He consulted with his advisor. “Your Majesty
can asked the genies to help built the temples,” said the advisor.
So, Bandung Bondowoso summoned his entire genies
soldier and commanded them to help him built a thousand temples. The genies
worked in unbelievable speed. Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang heard from her servant
that the building of a thousand temples was almost finished. She was so
worried. But again, she came up with a great idea. She asked all of her
servants to help her. “Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Please hurry

burning straw and pounding the mortar, making the genies think that the sun is
going to rise.
“It’s already dawn. We have to go,” said the leader of
the genies to Bandung Bondowoso. All the genies immediately stopped their work
and ran for cover from the sun, which they afraid of. They didn’t know that the
light was from the fire that burning the straw, not from the sun.
Bandung Bondowoso can’t stop the genies from leaving.
He was angry. He knew Loro Jonggrang had just tricked him. “You cannot fool me,
Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more temple. Now, I
will make you the one-thousandth temple.” He pointed his finger to Loro
Jonggrang and said some mantras. Magically, Loro Jonggrang’s body turned into
stone. Until now, the temple is still standing in Prambanan area, Central Java.
And the temple is called Loro Jonggrang temple.

Once upon a time, there was a
little poor boy came into a little village. He was very hungry and weak. He
knocked at every door and asked for some food, but nobody cared about him.
Nobody wanted to help the little boy.
Finally, a generous woman helped
him. She gave him shelter and a meal. When the boy wanted to leave, this old
woman gave him a lesung;, a big wooden mortar for pounding rice. She reminded
him, please remember, if there is a flood you must save yourself.
Use this lesung; as a boat;. The
lesung; was happy and thanked the old woman.The little boy continued his
journey. While he was passing through the village, he saw many people gathering
on the field. The boy came closer and saw a stick stuck in the ground. People
challenged each other to pull out that stick. Everybody tried, but nobody
succeeded. Can I try?; asked the little boy. The crowd laughed mockingly. The
boy wanted to try his luck so he stepped forward and pulled out the stick. He
could do it very easily. Everybody was dumbfounded.
Suddenly, from the hole left by
stick, water spouted out. It did not stop until it flooded the village. And no
one was saved from the water except the little boy and the generous old woman
who gave him shelter and meal. As she told him, he used the lesung; as a boat
and picked up the old woman. The whole village became a huge lake. It is now
known as Rawa Pening Lake in Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia.

The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu Mountain
Once, there was a kingdom in
Priangan Land. Lived a happy family. They were a father in form of dog,his name
is Tumang, a mother which was called is Dayang Sumbi, and a child which was
called Sangkuriang.
One day, Dayang Sumbi asked her son
to go hunting with his lovely dog, Tumang. After hunting all day, Sangkuriang
began desperate and worried because he hunted no deer. Then he thought to shot
his own dog. Then he took the dog liver and carried home.
Soon Dayang Sumbi found out that it
was not deer lever but Tumang’s, his own dog. So, She was very angry and hit
Sangkuriang’s head. In that incident, Sangkuriang got wounded and scar then
cast away from their home.
Years go bye, Sangkuriang had
travel many places and finally arrived at a village. He met a beautiful woman
and felt in love with her. When they were discussing their wedding plans, The
woman looked at the wound in Sangkuriang’s head. It matched to her son’s wound
who had left severall years earlier. Soon she realized that she felt in love
with her own son.
She couldn’t marry him but how to
say it. Then, she found the way. She needed a lake and a boat for celebrating
their wedding day. Sangkuriang had to make them in one night. He built a lake.
With a dawn just moment away and the boat was almost complete. Dayang Sumbi had
to stop it. Then, she lit up the eastern horizon with flashes of light. It made
the cock crowed for a new day.
Sangkuriang failed to marry her.
She was very angry and kicked the boat. It felt over and became the mountain of
Tangkuban Perahu Bandung.

The Legend of Kesodo Feast in Mount Bromo
Hundreds years ago, the last king of Majapahit had a
young princess from one of his wives. The princess was named Roro Anteng.
Later, Roro Anteng married Joko Seger, who came from Brahman caste.
Because of unfortunate situation the couple was
forced to leave the kingdom. They settled in the mountain area. They ruled the
area and named it Tengger, which was derived from their names, Roro Anteng and
Joko Seger.
After several years of reign, the region flourished
in prosperity, but Roro Anteng and Joko Seger were sad because they did not
have a child. They climbed the top of mountain and prayed there night and day
hoping that the God would listen. The prayer was heard and Betoro Bromo
promised to give them many children. However, they had to promise that they
would sacrifice their youngest child in return.
Roro Anteng gave birth to a child, then
another and another. In the end, Roro Anteng and Joko Seger had 25 children.
Soon it was time to sacrifice the youngest child , Kusuma, but the parents
could not do it. They tried to hide him, but an eruption happened and Kusuma
fell into the crater. There was silence before they heard a voice. “I have to
be sacrificed so that you will all stay alive. From now on, you should arrange
an annual offering ceremony on the 14th of Kesodo (the twelfth month of
Tengerese calendar)”. It was Kusuma’s voice. Kusuma’s brothers and sisters held
the offering ceremony every year. Instead of human being, they collected
fruits, vegetables, rice, and meat to be off to the Gods. And this has been
done generation after generation until today.

It was a beautiful day. Everybody
in the Kawar village was happy. The farmers had just had their best harvest.
The villagers were planning to hold a party to celebrate the good harvest. On
one beautiful day, all the villagers gathered in a field. They wore beautiful
dresses and made delicious food. Everybody was having good times! They were singing,
laughing and, of course, eating delicious food.
Did everyone go to the party?
Unfortunately, there was one old woman still staying at her house. She was too
old and weak to go to the party. Her son, her daughter-in-law, and her
grandchildren all went to the party. At home, the old woman felt very sad and
lonely. She was very hungry too. She tried to find some food in the kitchen,
but she was very disappointed. Her daughter-in-law did not cook that day. At
the party, the son asked her wife, “Why don’t you take some food from the party
and give it to my mom? Ask our son to deliver it.” Then the little boy brought
the food to her grandmother. The old woman was so happy. But her happiness
turned into sadness when she saw the food was not in a good condition. It
seemed that someone had eaten the food. She just got little rice and fish
bones.
The old woman was very sad. She
thought bad things about her son. The old woman did not know that it was her
grandson who had eaten the food on the way from the party to the house. She
cursed her son. Then, a terrible thing happened. There was a great earthquake!
Thunders struck the village. And heavy rains started to fall. All the villagers
were so scared. They wanted to save themselves. They tried to find shelters. Slowly,
the field turned into a lake. The lake was getting bigger and bigger, and
finally the whole village turned into a big lake. People then named the lake
Lau Kawar

Long time ago, there was a kingdom
in West Java. The kingdom was ruled by a king named His Majesty Prabu.
Prabu was a kind and wise king. But
it was a pity that Prabu and his queen hadn’t got any children. The queen often
cried. That was why Prabu went to the jungle. There he prayed to God every day,
begging for a child.
A few months later, the queen got
pregnant. Nine months later, a princess was born. Prabu and Queen loved their
beautiful daughter so much. They gave whatever she wanted. It made Princess
turn into a very spoiled girl.
One day, the princess celebrated
her 17th birthday party. Many people gathered in the palace. Then, Prabu took
out a necklace which was made from gold and jewel.
“My beloved daughter, today I give
you this necklace. Please, wear this necklace,” said Prabu.
“I don’t want to wear it! It’s
ugly!” shouted the princess. Then she threw the necklace. The beautiful
necklace was broken. The gold and jewels were spread out on the floor.
Everybody couldn’t say anything. They never thought that their beloved princess
would do that cruel thing. In their silence, people heard the queen crying.
Every woman felt sad and began crying, too. Then, everybody was crying. Then,
there was a miracle. Earth was crying.
Suddenly, from the underground, a
spring emerged. It made a pool of water. Soon, the place became a big lake. The
lake finally sank the kingdom.
Nowadays, people called the lake
“Telaga Warna”. It means “Lake of Color”. On a bright day, the lake is full of
color. These colors come from shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky
around the lake. But some people said that the colors are from the princess’s
necklace, which spreads at the bottom of the lake.

Semua orang tidak bisa mengatakan apa-apa. Mereka tidak pernah berpikir bahwa
putri kesayangan mereka akan melakukan hal yang kejam. Dalam keheningan mereka,
orang-orang mendengar ratu menangis. Setiap wanita merasa sedih dan mulai
menangis. Kemudian, semua orang menangis. Kemudian, ada keajaiban. Bumi
menangis.
Tiba-tiba,
